Artist Statement
I am interested in the visible and invisible structures which shape our everyday lives; notions
of physical and psychological boundaries; the nature of social systems, hierarchies and
routines embodied there within; the ideologies by which people regulate and construct their
environment and behaviour; the examination of easily overlooked spaces which have the
capacity to suggest and invoke individual and collective experiences; and how the past affects
the present. This point of subjectivity is crucial to me: by placing the viewer in an unfamiliar
position, with an uneasy point of recognition, I aim to analyse how the processes by which
our functions of perception, through recollection and invention, actively create those spaces,
personalities and narratives that exist in our culture and in our memories. I aim to transcend
the prosaic in order to evoke interlocking metaphors of history, ritual and psychologies,
generating multitudes of narratives.
